So-so.

1. Screen - seems bright and the pixels merge well. 11.6 or 12.1 are the largest screens that should be made with the 1366x768 resolution; the 15.6, 14.1 and even 13.3 screens with the same resolution just show space between the pixels too clearly.

2. Form factor - looks cooler in the pictures than it does in person. The 11.6" display is kind of a waste of space; the laptop's footprint is easily the size of a 12.1". There is a large keyboard that fills the base of the clamshell right to the edges, which is smart; however, the bezel around the screen is SO fat that the laptop footprint still ends up being the same size as one size up, without the benefit of a one-size-up screen. I have a 12.1" MSI Wind from 2-3 years ago that actually has a footprint a few tenths of an inch wider, but almost half an inch smaller in depth. This really needed to be a 12.1" notebook, or should have been half an inch smaller in width and depth. This whole "small screen with a huge bezel" design stopped being acceptable, oh, ten years ago. So, for being only 11.6", this one does not have an especially compact footprint; is DEFINITELY not thin; and is of average weight. You'll look at it for the first time and think: I was expecting something a lot more portable. This is surprisingly close in size to my old laptop.

3. Quality - mine was a BIG disappointment. The cooling fan makes a loud buzz; on one start-up cycle the thing threw a BIOS error saying that the system cooling fan was not functioning. The hard drive makes intermittent loud clunk-click noises (in addition to the normal noises of the platter spinning and the mechanical arm moving) that sound like impending hard drive motor death. I ordered a 4GB memory upgrade and found that the bottom case panel (aka "service door") was not completely snug all the way around. I removed the service door on the bottom to find that it is, essentially, not reusable. The whole body is made of very thin, very cheap plastic that creaks and groans. Does not feel like a quality product... and ABSOLUTELY not worth the sticker price. I will need to be returning this to have the HDD and system fan replaced, and will likely also be paying for a new service door since I removed it (even though it was already loose when the thing arrived).

4. Performance - horrible. Just horrible. The thing took 10 minutes to start for the first time. Cold boot takes 2-3 minutes. Netbooks are obviously on the slow end of the computing spectrum but this one really is one of the slowest I've ever owned or tried (and I've owned, let's say a dozen laptops and 20 netbooks in the last decade). I haven't tried multitasking yet; I'm assuming that once your various programs are open, it'll run pretty smoothly. But you'll be waiting for a LONG time for that joy. Super-long battery life off the wire is a nice concept but when you've put together a machine that chokes on its own operating system, you've created, essentially, an unacceptable product.

5. Other nits - the RAM upgrade comes on two DIMMs. So I basically just spent $80 for HP to install a $15 2GB module. And, I waited almost a month for the pleasure. Caveat emptor. At least if they had put a 4GB DIMM in there it would have been worth almost $25. The lesson here is: pay for the cheapest, most stripped-down model and BUY YOUR OWN RAM.

6. Other nits - the trackpad. HP and some other manufacturers have come up with this evil invention where the buttons on the trackpad are also PART of the trackpad, meaning that they also have capacitive sensors in the surface of the button. The concept is that you're extending the real estate available for tracking. Not only is it ugly and a little less fluid to use than real buttons, but you'll notice that when you click either mouse button, you have also single-tapped ON THE TRACKPAD. Sometimes the drivers figure out that they're supposed to ignore this action, sometimes they don't and, for example, your cursor jumps across the screen a few inches. Please, PLEASE, may these "integrated button" trackpads go the way of the dodo.

Anything good?

The keyboard. It's an island keyboard, feels very solid and comfortable. The screen is nice. The battery life is good. Two stars for those couple of relatively minor positives, and the fact that at least when I took it out of the box, plugged it in and turned it on, it started. It all went down-hill from there.

Conclusion?

I'm actually a big HP hardware fan. That's important to point out. I'm not new to HP, and in fact, it has now edged out Sony for my preferred manufacturer. I use HP hardware at work, there are (currently) no fewer than FIVE HP laptops around the house (including the dm1). The Probook 4430 and Pavilion dv4 are some of the best laptops I have EVER owned, and they come in at extremely competitive price range. There is smart engineering all around on those things, extremely attractive, extremely solid chassis, high-quality materials, and very, very well put together. This one seems like it was outsourced to some other firm. It was shipped via Fedex directly from China; I'm wondering if it's not just some re-badged mass market Chinese model. In no way other than the branding does it resemble the Probook sitting on my desk right now... even though they COST THE SAME PRICE!!!!

If you're in the market for an ultra-portable / netbook, unfortunately, this isn't worth it. Move along to some other netbook for $100-$200 less and receive superior quality and performance.

I can stream netflix to my hd tv, battery lasts several hours. Light and compact. I like a bigger screen for my school work, but if i was in a dorm or small apartment this would be plenty for a student.
