This works well in loose to moderate soil. If your trying to loosen up soil from one planting year to the next this will do the trick. However if your trying to loosen up sun-baked hard-packed rocky dirt you'd be better off with a shovel.

This thing is killer. Just put it on top of a weed, push it into the ground with your feet, and then twist the handle. BOOM! Goodbye weed. Pop it out, and throw it away. Do the same steps to mix your soil, till it up good. This is a great handtool. Well made, sturdy, LOVE IT!

This is an inexpensive, well built & simple gardening tool. It is very well built without being uncomfortably heavy. I have a very small garden and it was perfect for tilling a my small plot of land. You will get a workout but it is easier and quicker than a hoe and shovel. Excellent garden tool.
